KUALA LUMPUR:
Malaysian Resources Corporation Berhad (MRCB) are taking proactive measures to ensure that the development of the Sentral Suites multiple condominium project in Brickfields will not affect the surrounding community.

MRCB executive vice-president Dell Akhbar Khan said during the construction period, they would be working closely with the Department of Safety and Health (DOSH) and would adhere to all safety requirements.

Dell was commenting on the multiple condominium project, which is to begin this year at the former government quarters along Jalan Rozario, next to the Vivekananda Ashram.

The project will also take place about 20-30 metres from SMK Vivekananda and SK (T) Vivekananda schools.

“We are considering having to carry out work on the project after school hours and in the night, so as to not disrupt the classes,” he told FMT.

As for the possibility of damage to the surrounding buildings during the construction period, Dell said that they would conduct a survey to assess the condition of the buildings before construction starts.

“If any cracks emerges in the surrounding buildings during piling, then we will undertake to fix them. If there are any damages we will deal directly with the affected parties,” he said of the move which will also ascertain any pre-existing damage prior to the start of construction.

Aside from the two schools and the Vivekananda Ashram, there is also a Lutheran church and its neighbouring hostel, within 50 metres from the large Sentral Suites project site.

Dell said that they would continue to monitor the surrounding areas as work progresses and if there was any additional complain the contractors would verify the issue and rectify it.

“We will also be working closely with the community here, during the construction period and we will address whatever grievances they have.”

As for the additional safety features during construction, Dell said they would address the issue as requested by the community.

“For now, it’s quite difficult for us to say what additional safety measures we are going to take. We can’t anticipate, other than what is required by DOSH.

“The additional safety features required will be assessed as the construction progresses.”

Traffic management

On traffic management, Dell said it would remain the same for the time being.

“To change the flow, it will have to involve a lot of authorities.

“If it does arise that we need to make changes to the flow or do diversions, we will consult with the authorities and the community.”

As for the noise pollution, Dell said they would abide by the stipulated noise regulation set by the authorities.

Meanwhile, SK (T) Vivekananda Parent Teacher Association (PTA) committee member K Tamilhselvan said they hoped meet with Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) and MRCB before construction starts.

He said the school’s main concern was the safety of students, noise pollution and the traffic congestion that would arise during construction.

“There is a dual lane in front of the schools and on weekdays, the roads are constantly congested with school buses and parents fetching their children.

“DBKL and MRCB must have an adequate traffic plan together with relevant counter measures to address our concerns.”

Tamilhselvan also hopes that DBKL and MRCB will inform stakeholders well before the construction starts.

“The sooner they inform us the better, as we will be able to inform teachers, parents and the bus operators to be prepared before construction starts.”
