Batu Caves temple committee ready to face spray painting threat

Wanita MIC to lodge police report against group threatening to harm women wearing provocative clothes during the Thaipusam festival.

PETALING JAYA:
The Batu Caves temple committee and Wanita MIC are against any moral policing during Thaipusam celebrations on Feb 9.

A group on Facebook had threatened to spray paint any women who wore provocative dressing during the religious ceremony.

Sri Maha Mariamman Temple Devasthanam chairman R Nadarajah said the temple committee would strictly monitor the activities of Hindu devotees and visitors.

“There is a dress code to be observed by both men and women during the festival. We want them to follow it, but we will not force them.

“Those we find disregarding the dress code will be informed discreetly and very nicely,” he told the Sun Daily.

Nadarajah hoped the festival will be conducted peacefully.

“No group should be threatening others, especially women on how they dress.

“We will reach out to the authorities should we spot anyone attempting to carry out such threats.”

MIC Wanita chief Mohana Muniandy told the daily it would lodge a police report on the Facebook posting.

“We have been advising women to dress appropriately during religious festivals and temple visits.”

The “Thaipusam Spraying Group”, on Facebook, carried pictures showing the backs of women wearing designer saree blouses.

The posting has led to a discussion on social media on appropriate dressing for religious occasions.

Gombak police chief ACP Ali Ahmad said they had received information about the group and police will investigate once a police report had been lodged.
