KUALA LUMPUR:
The water supply cut by Syarikat Bekalan Air Selangor Sdn Bhd (Syabas) starting from tomorrow (Dec 19) until December 24 as part of its water rationing will be a major inconvenience for Selangor residents especially with the Christmas holidays around the corner.

Water cuts are a yearly occurrence for Selangorians and to many, this supply disruption comes as no surprise.

This latest disruption is due to maintenance work at the Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) substation in Bukit Badong, Hulu Selangor.

However, Syabas said it would ensure that water supply would be distributed efficiently to the affected areas namely Petaling, Klang/Shah Alam, Gombak, Kuala Langat, Hulu Selangor, Kuala Selangor and Kuala Lumpur, after the affected treatment plants, resumed operations.

For Gombak resident Shahful Shaffiq, preparing ahead and storing water in containers kept him on his toes today.

When met by Bernama, the 31-year-old, who works in the online news industry, said the cut in water supply was a major inconvenience to his everyday basic needs such as showering, cleaning and cooking.

“I might only be able to take a proper shower before I leave for work, I will not be able to cook and clean much until the supply returns to normal.

“I also went to the nearest store and bought a drum to fill up water, hopefully just enough for my needs,” he added.

Meanwhile, for Noel Chandran, the possibility of having water disruptions doing the Christmas Eve celebration would be a great bane for him and his family.

“This is the first time, we have had to face a disruption of water supply during the Christmas season. I wonder how am I going to manage as I have invited extended family and friends to my home,” said the 66-year-old from Selayang Baru.

Chandran said he hoped Syabas would send over more water tanks during the festive season as many would need sufficient water when entertaining guests.

On the other hand, restaurant owners were well prepared for the water cut beginning tomorrow. Rodeo Steakhaus manager Jai Raido, 23, said every year, when there was a water cut, the restaurant stored water in tanks so their business could operate as usual.

“Every year, we prepare water tanks to do our cooking and cleaning. We usually fill up two big tanks placed above our restaurant, which can last for about two days. Then we refill it when water supply returns for a while,” he added.

Asked whether business would be severely affected, he replied in the negative.

“There is no major impact to our business. Whether or not there is a water cut, customers still continue coming,” he added.
