The electoral watchdog criticised UM for finding Anis Syafiqah Md Yusof, Suhail Wan Azahar, Luqman Nul Haqim Zul Razali, and Muhammad Luqman Hakim Mohd Fazli guilty of indiscipline related to the Tangkap MO1 rally in August 2016.
“The students were merely exercising their freedom of speech, assembly, and association, which is enshrined in Article 10 of the Federal Constitution,” Bersih 2.0 said in a statement today.
The NGO noted that the questions on corruption raised by the students at the rally had yet to be addressed by the authorities.
“It’s now for the government to take up the challenge and respond appropriately,” it said.
The statement said the students were put on the carpet by UM despite the fact they were not charged in court over the rally.
It said bullying students through unfair disciplinary procedures did not bode well for the UM administration.
“Silencing student voices must stop,” said Bersih, urging UM to drop all disciplinary charges against the students.
“The youth will inherit the country, the authorities should listen to them,” Bersih said.
