Kerian district police chief Supt Omar Bakhtiar Yaacob said in the 11.27am incident, the suspects broke the automatic door of the premises then fired a shot with the pump gun before fleeing with the jewellery in a car, bearing false registration number plates.
“An investigation revealed that the modus operandi is similar as the robbery incident at a jewellery shop in Parit Buntar in 2013,” he told reporters when met at the scene.
Omar Bakhtiar said the amount of losses incurred was still under investigation and that police had launched an operation codenamed “Op Tutup” to track down the suspects.
The shop owner Fong Kok Heng, 51, said it was the first such incident to occur at his premises since he started his business 18 years ago.
