However, Pendang Umno delegate Othman Abdul says it does not mean he wants the Red Shirts leader to get into a fight.

KUALA LUMPUR:
A Pendang Umno delegate today praised Red Shirts movement leader Jamal Yunos for standing up and defending the Malay community.

“It’s not that we are asking them to get into a fight, but just defend our dignity,” Othman Abdul, who is also the Pendang MP, said in the Umno General Assembly here.

Othman went on to state that if the Yellow shirts – a term used to describe the Bersih 2.0 electoral watchdog and its supporters – did not exist, neither would the Red Shirts.

Jamal, who is also the Sungai Besar division chief, had last month organised a gathering to counter the Bersih 5 rally.

It was reported that Red Shirts’ supporters had also harassed Bersih supporters when they organised a nationwide convoy, leading up to the Nov 19 rally, which saw around 40,000 attend.

Jamal – who suffered a bloody nose following a scuffle when he led a group to confront Bersih supporters in Ampang last month – had yesterday brought a cardboard representation of PKR vice-president Rafizi Ramli to the Umno general assembly.

Jamal said this was to remind party members of Rafizi’s past treachery.

Meanwhile, Nurhayati Omar, a Wanita Umno delegate, hit out at Bersih 2.0 over allegations that it received funds from foreign donors.

“They clamour for justice and human rights without being mindful of our parliamentary democracy.”

She then urged the government, home ministry and other agencies to investigate the source of the funds of the electoral reform group.

Bersih 2.0 chairperson Maria Chin Abdullah had previously said that Bersih 2.0 had only received a one-time funding of RM70,000 from the Open Society Foundations, established by hedge fund billionaire George Soros, between 2010 and 2011.
