Kuala Lumpur Mayor Mhd Amin Nordin Abd Aziz said the order to cease operations was issued today to SP Setia Berhad, the project developer.
“The have to stop work on the bridge immediately. However, they can continue with other parts of the project,” he told reporters after an appreciation ceremony for enforcement agencies at DBKL headquarters.
Amin was commenting on the incident where one person was killed and five injured when part of a pedestrian bridge under construction near Mid Valley Megamall collapsed.
The bridge is being built to connect SP Setia’s KL Eco City project to The Gardens Mall in Mid Valley.
The KL Eco City construction site is located near Kampung Haji Abdullah Hukum in Jalan Bangsar.
Amin also believed that the incident occurred due to the foundation of the bridge.
“It’s a curve bridge and I believe that the foundation was not stable as opposed to a straight bridge.
“But in terms of the technical issues of what happened, I do not know.”
When asked if any action would be taken against the developer, Amin said as the local authority, DBKL was only involved in the approval of the planning process.
“We are not involved with any technical issue of the project. So we will leave it to the Department of Occupational Safety and Health (DOSH) and the Construction Industry Development Board (CIDB) to investigate the incident.”
