Police say the organisers failed to give early notice for the public assembly.
Bersih 2.0 steering committee northern peninsula vice-chairman Toh Kin Woon said he was asked to be present at the Northeast district police headquarters in Patani Road at 1pm.
“The officer said it was with regard to speeches I made last night at the Esplanade and at the vigil on Nov 21 in front of the Penang police headquarters,” the former three-term Penang assembly member told reporters.
Toh, who was also a former Dewan Negara senator, was accompanied by lawyer Cheah Kah Peng, Bayan Baru MP Sim Tze Tzin, and city councillor Kumaresan Arumugam.
Following Maria’s arrest under the Special Offences (Security Measures) Act 2012 (Sosma), the Bersih northern chapter had a candlelight vigil outside the police headquarters calling for her freedom.
It was learnt that Bersih’s northern peninsula programme officer Lee Chung Lun was also called in by the Northeast district police this morning.
Meanwhile, Northeast district police chief ACP Mior Faridalathrash Wahid said the statements were being recorded as part of an investigation under the Peaceful Assembly Act 2012.
He said the Bersih leaders were being investigated for not giving a ten-day notice to the district police chief of their public gathering at the state police headquarters and at the Esplanade grounds on Nov 21.
Mior said there would be no arrests for now.
In the vigil held last week, Bersih supporters held a peaceful assembly following Maria’s detention.
Those in attendance wore Bersih 5 T-shirts and held placards which read “Bebas Maria” and “Mansuh Sosma”. They lit up candles and placed them at the entrance of the police headquarters.
