The Star Online reported the decision was reached earlier and the assemblymen were informed about it at the state assembly.
State Tourism, Culture and Environment Minister Masidi Manjun said all teachers’ training institutes would maintain their original function to ensure there were sufficient local teachers for the state.
“This is also in line with Prime Minister Najib Razak’s announcement to have 90% locals teaching in the state by 2018,” he said.
Masidi, who is also the minister in charge of education affairs, said this after the education ministry wanted to convert the two institutes into vocational centres as “they were not cost-effective”.
The Sarawak government recently also opposed the plan to convert two teacher training colleges in the state to technical institutes.
Chief Minister Adenan Satem described the plan as a “stupid decision”.
