Woman upset ‘affordable home’ used as homestay

The disabled woman says she has exhausted all avenues to seek a solution as strangers renting the unit make a lot of noise and are a threat to her safety.

GEORGE TOWN:
Annoyed by short-term rent guests going in back and forth next door, an angry owner of an affordable housing unit in Gelugor sent a protest note to the Penang government at the state assembly today.

K L Soh, 50, who was fed up after exhausting all complaint channels, decided to meet state executive councillor in charge of housing Jagdeep Singh Deo.

However, she did not get to meet Jagdeep. She handed over a document detailing her grouses to his representative, Fakhurrazi Ibnu Omar.

“I have complained to almost everyone — Public Complaints Bureau, city council, Jagdeep, everyone. But until today, no action has been taken.

“I feel sad for those who applied for affordable housing when we have people who are renting out their homes for RM200 a day. Some have stayed for two months.

“I am also worried about my safety as strange people walk back and forth along the corridor daily, with some dirtying it as well.

“Some are rude as they slam doors and make noise,” the disabled woman told reporters outside the state assembly building today.

In Penang, owners of affordable homes are not allowed to sell or rent their homes for 10 years. Those who purchase affordable homes must also stay there.

Soh’s apartment is new, with residents moving there about a year ago.

Parti Cinta Malaysia vice-president Huan Cheng Guan, who accompanied Soh, felt the government should go on enforcement rounds to ensure the actual owners are staying there.

“We have nearly 20,000 applicants for affordable homes on the waiting list. This is grossly unfair to them,” Huan said.

Soh said she had also complained to the Commissioner of Buildings and the joint management body of her apartment.

“They have acknowledged the problem. But they have yet to resolve the problem.

“I have been staying here for 19 months. I have emailed Jagdeep but he did not reply me.

“In February, after I sought MCA’s help, Jagdeep’s office replied my email. The email said they will take action. But until today … nothing,” she said.

Recently, Parti Cinta Malaysia revealed that the particular apartment block Soh was staying in had rich people staying in them.

It also revealed that many units were being rented out on online property websites.

FMT is waiting for a response from Jagdeep on Soh’s problem.
