KUALA LUMPUR:
An opposition MP has urged the government to allocate at least 50% of affordable homes to young Malaysians to prevent those who own multiple residences from acquiring such units.

Shahidan Kassim (PN-Arau) said some individuals owned multiple homes yet were still able to purchase affordable units provided by the government.

“We want at least 50% of affordable homes built by the government to be earmarked for young first-time homebuyers,” he told the Dewan Rakyat in the committee level debate on the Supply Bill (Budget) 2026 for the housing and local government ministry.

Shahidan, a former federal territories minister, urged the government to compile detailed statistics on home ownership, complaining that there was a lack of such information.

He also urged Putrajaya to account for the demographics of an area and ensure Bumiputera home ownership in its urban planning.
