PETALING JAYA: Opposition politician Ronnie Liu, who has high blood pressure, has been taken to hospital after fainting in a police lock-up last night.

Liu had been arrested on Friday and held for investigations into incitement to riot. Police have also arrested 17 other people for various offences relating to the Bersih 5 rally yesterday.

The DAP’s Lim Lip Eng confirmed with Oriental Daily News that Liu did not have his medicine while in the lock-up and had fainted.

Lim, MP for Segambut, said police had not allowed family members and a lawyer to pass the medicine to Liu in the lockup. He said DAP leaders could not visit Liu at Kuala Lumpur Hospital last night, as his ward was under tight security.

They would try to visit Liu today. Liu was a former Selangor assemblyman for Pandamaran and a former executive councillor.

Among others who have been detained were Bersih leader Maria Chin Abdullah and Red Shirts leader Jamal Yunos.

Tens of thousands of people took part in the demonstration in central Kuala Lumpur yesterday. A rival rally by the pro-establishment Red Shirts movement drew some estimated 3,000 people.

The rally was relatively incident free, with only a few minor incidents of clashes between rival supporters.
