Khairy says Mahathir ‘played’ the opposition

At the end of the rally yesterday, the real issue disappeared. No one spoke of Anwar Ibrahim. Everything was about Tun M, says BN Youth leader.

KUALA LUMPUR:
Former premier Dr Mahathir Mohamad has earned sarcastic congratulations from Barisan Nasional Youth leader Khairy Jamaluddin for successfully hijacking the Bersih 5 rally yesterday.

“Congratulations to Tun M, he successfully made Bersih his platform, all opposition leaders have absolutely been played by him,” he was reported to have said after attending a BN Youth convention today.

Dr Mahathir appeared at yesterday’s street demonstration, wearing a yellow Bersih 5 t-shirt, and spoke to a crowd of about 10,000 outside the Kuala Lumpur City Centre complex.

Khairy said opposition leaders and Bersih participants did not realise that they had been played by Dr Mahathir.

“At the end of the rally yesterday, the real issue disappeared. Nobody spoke of Anwar Ibrahim. Everything was about Tun M,” Khairy was quoted as saying.

Dr Mahathir’s return from a meeting in Sudan and his appearance at the rally made headlines and featured prominently in news reports abroad.

Bersih leaders have denied that the former premier had stolen the show, and promised to abandon anyone who tried to derail the movement’s reform agenda.
