Jalan Tuanku Abdul Rahman, where many Bersih 5 participants had assembled for almost the whole day, was as clean as if no event had taken place.
Most of the rally participants adhered to the instructions from Bersih 5 volunteers to pick up rubbish on the street and dispose of them in bins provided.
“This is ‘bersih’. We eat and drink and clean up after ourselves. We are not a dirty group,” said a Bersih 5 volunteer who only wanted to be known as Amanda.
“We pick up the rubbish voluntarily. We do not get paid and this is appropriate with the ‘Bersih’ rally, so the area must also be ‘bersih’ (clean),” said Jim Wong.
Supporters of the rival Red Shirt rally, however, had earlier left Padang Merbok with rubbish strewn all over.
Most Bersih supporters have moved on from Masjid Jamek and Jalan Tuanku Abdul Rahman, and are heading to KLCC, where former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad and other opposition leaders are gathered.
