Joseph Pairin Kittingan believes the only way to curb the illegal immigrant menace is to re-issue new identity cards to Sabahans.

KOTA KINABALU:
The Technical Committee (TC) on the Royal Commission of Inquiry (RCI) on the illegal immigrant problem in Sabah, is in the final stages of completing its report.

The document, dubbed the Pairin Report, will have recommendations to address the problem of llegals in the Borneo state.

Parti Bersatu Sabah (PBS) president Joseph Pairin Kitingan, who heads the TC, said this in his policy speech at the party’s 31st annual party meet on Tuesday, according to a Borneo Post report.

The report would be submitted to the management committee (MC) on the RCI findings. The MC is headed by Deputy Prime Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, assisted by Chief Minister Musa Aman.

Pairin, who is Sabah deputy chief minister, did not touch on recommendations the TC would make.

However, he called for the re-registration of Sabahans as citizens and the re-issuance of identity cards (IC) to them as this would weed out illegal immigrants.

He believed the re-issuance of new ICs is important as it is the only way to filter the ‘contaminated’ citizen’s list.

“It’s the only way to bring back the people’s confidence in the government.”

Pairin does not see any way out on the illegal immigrant phenomenon in Sabah except through re-issuance of ICs.

Elsewhere, he lamented on the failure of the Eastern Sabah Security Command (EssCom) overseeing the Eastern Sabah Security Zone (EssZone). It covers the eastern seaboard of the state.
