KUALA LUMPUR:
Two companies were fined a total of RM30,000 by the Sessions Court on Wednesday for risking the safety of workers.

Ireka Engineering & Construction Sdn Bhd and Asia One Management Development Sdn Bhd pleaded guilty before judge Harmi Thamri Mohamad @ Shaharudin.

They were fined RM15, 000 each.

They faced charges under Sections 15(1) and 17(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act (OSHA).

Ireka Engineering failed to provide a safe work system for “catch platforms” at a construction site in Kampung Haji Abdullah Hukum. This allegedly caused the death of an Indonesian labourer.

According to the facts of the case, the Department of Occupational Safety and Health (DOSH) inspected the construction site on July 27 after an accident. DOSH found that Mudekki, an Indonesian, died following a lack of safety standards.

Mudekki fell down from the 33rd floor and was stuck in the scaffolding on the eighth floor. The deceased was working on the catch platform.

Lift maintenance company, Asia One, failed to provide safe work procedures at Pangsapuri Bukit Awan Sari, Taman Yarl. It led to the death of a local labourer.

DOSH inspected the apartment on August 23, according to the facts of the case. It found R Nageswara died after plunging from the arm lift at level nine.

Nageswara was assigned to lift maintenance work on the ninth floor on August 22, said DOSH.
