KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia has spent a total of RM30.2 million towards the upkeep of pandas from China since 2014, said Natural Resources and Environment Minister Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar.

In his written reply, he said Putrajaya allocated RM25.4 million and the remainder was spent by Zoo Negara under the Giant Panda Conservation International Cooperation Agreement.

The two pandas were loaned to Malaysia in 2014 but this came under heavy criticism from the public due to the high cost in looking after them.

The two giant pandas, Fu Wa (Xing Xing) and Feng Yi (Liang Liang), were loaned to Malaysia for 10 years since 2014.

Wan Junaidi said Malaysia will give an additional US$600,000 to the China for each panda cub that is born here.

“Even to name the panda cub, we need China’s approval as per the agreement,” Wan Junaidi said.

The two pandas have an offspring born in Aug 2016.

The birth of the cub has reportedly set a world record as it is the first pair to naturally reproduce within 15 months in captivity, beating Japan’s record of 18 months.

Xing Xing and Liang Liang arrived in Malaysia on May 21, 2014 and are housed in a 1.6 hectare air-conditioned complex at the national zoo.

China agreed to loan them to Malaysia to mark 40 years of diplomatic ties in 2014.
