Madius Tangau, acting president of United Pasokmomogun Kadazandusun Murut Organisation, said no Barisan Nasional component party should contest more than half the seats at the next general election.
He said there had been such a convention, to ensure that no one party dominates. However, the rule was no longer in practice.
“We hope the 14th general election will mark a fresh power-sharing system not only in terms of seats but across the board,” said Tangau at Upko’s annual conference, which was opened by Barisan Nasional chairman Najib Razak.
Tangau also spoke about Sabah’s issues such as illegal immigrants and the Malaysia Agreement of 1963.
He said his party was gearing up for the general election and wanted to contest four of the 13 proposed new state seats.
Upko wanted the Federal Government to recall the Malaysian identity cards issued in Sabah to resolve the issue of fake citizenship brought up by a royal commission into illegal immigrants.
“It is doable because we have changed our ICs many times. The end result will be the right outcome for all,” he said.
He screened a video clip of former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad admitting to the issuance of ICs to illegal immigrants and said it was very clear that there was a need to reissue ICs in Sabah.
