KUALA LUMPUR: The High Court has given the green light to former opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim to challenge the Prisons Department for denying him physical contact with his family.

Justice Nik Hasmat Nik Mohamed granted leave on the grounds that Anwar’s application was not vexatious or frivolous.

“There are enough issues to be heard on the merits,” she said on the reasons given in the application.

Justice Nik Hasmat earlier asked Anwar to stand up and address the court on why he needed to have physical touch with his family.

“I want to have the basic right to touch my grandchildren,” said Anwar.

He added that he did not touch them for about 10 years – from his last prison term to the current one. He urged that all prisoners be allowed to touch their families.

“I could only have five minutes with my loved ones,” he told the court.

Anwar filed a judicial review on May 18 to challenge the Prisons Department and the government. The application argued that they were depriving him of human contact.

Anwar, his wife Wan Azizah Wan Ismail, his four daughters and four grandchildren are seeking to quash the order made by the director of Sungai Buloh prison on March 14 who rejected his application to have physical contact with family members.

The order should cover the remainder period of imprisonment, the application reads.
