KUALA LUMPUR: The Political Donations and Expenditure Act (PDEA) should be legislated immediately following the disclosure by international portal DC Leaks regarding sponsorship funding by the Open Society Foundations (OSF) to Malaysian NGOs for political mileage, says Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Azalina Othman Said.
In a statement here today, she said the disclosure reinforced the need and justification for the act to be implemented without delay.
She said the alleged involvement of billionaire George Soros in the distribution of funds to NGOs for political mileage should be taken seriously and that a thorough investigation was necessary to ensure that the funds received were not abused or threatened national sovereignty.
She said the PDEA should also be extended to NGOs with political agendas if they have misused their funds.
“We are worried about possible foreign intervention without any restrictions that could destroy the country,” she added.
