KUALA LUMPUR:
The education ministry’s decision to transfer to another school a headmaster who shared pornographic videos in a WhatsApp group earned the ire of an Opposition lawmaker.

Teo Nie Ching (DAP-Kulai) said the headmaster, who is based in Sabah, should in fact be banned from schools for up to two years.

“If the headmaster is not fit to be in the original school, why should he be in another school?”

She told FMT the headmaster should be transferred to a district education office from several months, up to two years.

“If the parents find out that the present headmaster was transferred from another school after downloading porn, they will be angry.”

Earlier, she had raised the issue with Deputy Education Minister P Kamalanathan in the Dewan Rakyat today.

She had asked what disciplinary action was taken against the said headmaster after complaints were lodged in March.

Kamalanathan had said that the education ministry would act “appropriately” on complaints, provided they had a strong basis.

“The ministry does not take such issues lightly,” he told Parliament.

He also clarified that the WhatsApp group was created for other purposes which had nothing to do with education.

“When he was questioned, the headmaster admitted to the mistake and has left the group. If it happens again, further action will be taken.”

In March, it was reported that a headmaster was immediately transferred for uploading and sharing pornographic pictures and videos by another of the group’s members.

The decision to do so then, The Star reported, angered many parents who questioned the Sabah Education Department’s move after the controversy broke out.

Sabah Education Director Jame Alip was reported as saying that the move to transfer the headmaster was an “immediate measure” taken by the department to calm the situation then.
