“We are yet to see details of the proposal but certainly the matter will be discussed among Pakatan Harapan MPs.
“Hopefully, we will take a common position on this matter,” he said at the menteri besar’s office.
“Discussions are still going on. Sometimes, there are issues where the party will take a position and that position will be discussed in Pakatan Harapan.”
Amanah revealed yesterday that it will table a private member’s bill motion as an alternative to PAS President Abdul Hadi Awang’s motion on Syariah Courts (Criminal Jurisdiction) Act, or Act 355.
Azmin, who is also Gombak MP, said he had no qualms regarding the sudden move by Amanah without consulting other members in the Opposition pact.
Hadi’s private member’s bill seeks to amend the Syariah Courts (Criminal Jurisdiction) Act, to give more powers to shariah courts, particularly in the matter of punishment.
Critics have said that the idea is to pave the way for implementation of hudud, especially in PAS-ruled Kelantan, but PAS has denied this.
Azmin’s remarks come a day after PKR’s Tian Chua and Amanah’s Khalid Samad said their parties had no qualms about strengthening the powers of the shariah courts in meting out harsher punishments.
Khalid, who is also the Shah Alam lawmaker, also revealed that his party had drafted its own motion, which he claimed was clearer and specifically targeted at empowering the shariah courts.
He also said that the party had submitted the motion to the Dewan last week through its Kota Raja MP, Dr Siti Mariah Mahmud.
Khalid said Amanah had also discussed its alternative motion with DAP and PKR, adding that both had agreed in principle to the motion as it was within the framework of the Constitution.
The Amanah communication director went on to claim that their motion was “much more acceptable to all parties”.
