PKR deputy president Azmin Ali said a meeting will be held on Monday to discuss PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang’s move to table a bill amending the Syariah Court (Criminal Jurisdiction) Act.
A motion to table the bill is on the order paper of the Dewan Rakyat, which begins its six-week Budget meeting on Monday.
Azmin said his party (PKR) had already discussed the Hadi bill two weeks ago, and he expected a statement to be issued by the party soon.
Leaders of the ruling Barisan Nasional have said that the coalition has reached a consensus on Hadi’s bill. However, no details were made available.
Hadi’s bill is opposed by the MCA, Gerakan, MIC, Sarawak BN component parties as well as the DAP, a member of Pakatan Harapan. The other Pakatan members, PKR and Parti Amanah, which comprises former PAS dissidents, have yet to announce their stand.
The bill has yet to be tabled and debated by the House. A simple majority of 122 votes in the 222-member Dewan Rakyat would be required for the bill to be passed. If approved, it would allow the Kelantan syariah courts to enforce Islamic criminal penalties under a state law passed last year.
