Terengganu CID chief Wan Abd Aziz Wan Hamzah said the victim, Mohd Sukri Hussin, was stabbed by his prospective brother-in-law.
“We obtained information from the public about the incident at 11.36am. Based on initial investigation, the suspect, a 29-year-old, went to the Maidam office with his family to check on his marital status.
“Upon checking, the suspect was found to have been married previously. However, the suspect claimed to the victim’s family that he was still a bachelor. An argument ensued which led to a scuffle between the suspect and the victim, who was an older brother to the suspect’s future wife,” Wan Abd Aziz told reporters when met at the scene of the crime.
Wan Abd Aziz said in the scuffle, it was believed that the suspect had produced a six-inch knife with which he stabbed the victim six times on the neck and left chest.
“The suspect then fled in a car with the assistance of two friends after pointing the knife at a security guard. Police have launched a manhunt for the three men. We believe they are still in the state,” he said.
Police used footage from a security camera to identify the suspect and his friends.
The security guard, Mohd Suffian Yusof, 23, said he was lowering the barrier at the main gate when the suspect emerged, pointing a knife, saying: “Saya tak nak kacau orang.” (I don’t want to disturb anyone). He raised the barrier himself and sped off in his car. I did not know a murder had occurred. I thought it was a car theft,” he said.
