Kelantan’s Sultan Muhammad V to be next Agong

Sultan of Kelantan succeeds Tuanku Abdul Halim Mu'adzam Shah of Kedah, who completes his reign in December, with Sultan of Perak named deputy.

PETALING JAYA: The Sultan of Kelantan, Sultan Muhammad V was today named the 15th Yang di-Pertuan Agong by the Conference of Rulers.

Sultan Muhammad will take over the throne from the current King, the Sultan of Kedah, Tuanku Abdul Halim Mu’adzam Shah, who will complete his five-year reign on December 12.

Meanwhile, Sultan of Perak, Sultan Nazrin Muizzuddin Shah, 59, will take over from Sultan Muhammad V as the new Deputy Yang di-Pertuan Agong.

Sultan Muhammad V, who just turned 47 last Thursday, received his early education at Sekolah Sultan Ismail I before continuing his studies at the Alice Smith International School in Kuala Lumpur.

He later finished his studies in 1989 at the Oakham School Rutland in England before moving on to receive his tertiary education in diplomatic research at the St Cross College in Oxford and the Oxford Centre for Islamic Studies, graduating in 1991.

The then Tengku Muhammad Faris Petra was installed as the Sultan of Kelantan on Sept 13, 2010.

Sultan Muhammad V is currently the Chancellor of Universiti Malaysia Kelantan (UMK) and is said to be an avid reader as well as a motor-racing enthusiast, having taken part in four-wheel drive expeditions and endurance riding.

He also loves archery as well as bowling and has a soft spots for cats, horses, and birds.
