PETALING JAYA: The Higher Education Ministry is mooting guidelines to prevent the misuse of academic titles such as “Dr”.

This comes in the wake of questions over motivational speaker Azizan Osman’s doctor of philosophy (PhD) credentials.

The New Straits Times reported Higher Education Minister Idris Jusoh as saying that the ministry was trying to come out with guidelines regarding the issue.

“We are in the midst of discussions with several universities on the matter, and will come up with guidelines in two months’ time,” he was reported as saying after presenting letters of appointment to members of the National Professors Council (NPC) here today.

“First, we have to clearly define (what constitutes as) misuse of the PhD title, and whether the action can be criminialised.”
