Wanita Gerakan Chief Tan Lian Hoe said it was necessary for the government to introduce extra oversight in all projects to enhance transparency as government projects were financed using public funds, Star Online reported.
Tan suggested that the Auditor-General and the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) expand their monitoring mechanism to include government projects valued at below RM500 million.
Chief Secretary to the Government Ali Hamsa has announced that the A-G and the MACC will be involved in all government projects worth RM500 million and above as a necessary and proactive measure to curb corruption and abuses in the public sector.
This follows the MACC’s seizure of more than RM114 million in its ongoing probe into projects by the Sabah Water Department.
The news portal said Tan welcomed the announcement to prevent corruption and abuses in the public sector.
“We were appalled by reports of completed projects which failed to comply with the requirements and with poor quality that suggested corrupt practices and abuses in the public sector, especially with the corrupted bidding process and public procurement.”
