KUALA LUMPUR: The Education Ministry has sacked the chairman of the Malaysian Institute of Translation and Books, Shahruddin Md Salleh, with immediate effect.

No reason was given for his termination, which comes eight months before his contract expires.

In a statement last night the ministry said the termination was based on the authority empowered to the Education Minister.

Shahruddin had been appointed chairman of the institute’s Board of Directors from Feb 1, 2010 to Jan 31, 2012.

His contract was extended from Feb 1, 2012 to Jan 31, 2014 but he resigned on April 19, 2013, as he was involved in politics, according to the statement.

He was reappointed by the Education Minister to the post from July 1, 2013 to June 30, 2015, and his contract extended from July 1, 2015 until June 30, 2017.
