J Sony Liston, 42, and his wife, M Yagambaresvary, 31, were charged with robbing the shop on Sept 1 at 2.15pm and carting away five gold chains worth RM12,000.
If convicted, they could be jailed up to 12 years and whipped.
Sessions Court Judge Irwan Suainbon set bail at RM7,000 in one surety for each of the accused and ordered their passports to be surrendered.
The bail was set after the couple’s counsel pleaded for a reduced sum as Sony was the sole breadwinner at home and earned little as a cendol seller. He had also undergone a heart operation not long ago.
The couple, in the meantime, will have to report to the nearest police station once a month.
Irwan set Nov 9 for case management.
Deputy Public Prosecutor Lim Sook Sin prosecuted.
It was reported that a couple had used an axe to break jewellery cases on display before getting away with their loot on a motorcycle.
There were no customers at the time and it took them a full three minutes, based on video footage of the robbery.
