This was what police found out when they investigated the two smoke bombs found at the Air Panas People’s Housing Project (PPR) in Setapak on Tuesday.
It was reported that the grenades were found at 3.30pm on Tuesday at a garbage disposal area of the housing area.
Wangsa Maju District Police Chief Supt Mohamad Roy Suhaimi Sarif said these smoke bombs were usually used to maintain public order, the Sun Daily reported.
He said the bomb disposal squad had confirmed that the bombs were still active.
Police are conducting a check with Syarikat Malaysia Explosives Sdn Bhd, a Malaysian defence company that specialises in the manufacture and marketing of ordnance, to identify the owner of the bomb, the report said.
The bombs have been sent to the Forensic Department for further checks.
Roy said a joint crime prevention patrol team, comprising Federal Reserve Unit officers and Wangsa Maju policemen, had found the bombs during a visit to the Air Panas PPR.
They were there following the recent spike in the crime rate in the area, which has almost 22,000 residents.
Police have ruled out the possibility of terror links.
