PETALING JAYA:
The Mid Valley Megamall will make it easier for the disabled to move around when they visit the shopping complex.

For starters, it pledged to improve accessibility from the nearby KTM station to the entrance of the mall for the disabled.

This was in response to Monday’s protest staged by the Damai Disabled Persons Association and Dual Blessings, during which more than 30 wheelchair-bound people demanded disabled-friendly pathways in the vicinity of the mall.

“The Mid Valley Megamall management will commit efforts into this initiative to further improve accessibility from the train station to the shopping mall, despite understanding that the timeline is not within our control,” the mall’s management said in an email to FMT.

The mall will raise the level of the road between the KTM station and the entrance of the mall, making it easier for the wheelchair-bound to access the pedestrian pathway.

The protest on Monday saw the two disabled groups complaining that it was too dangerous to cross the road from the train station.

At the moment the wheelchair-bound find it impossible to access the pedestrian pathway, as the kerb on the pathway is simply too high to move across. This forces them to wheel their way to the mall alongside heavy traffic.

FMT observed that two police auxiliary officers stationed there assist the disabled to cross the road and get on to the pedestrian pathway.

According to the management, hazard lights have been installed on both sides of the road at the zebra crossing.

“Attention will be given to the railings along the pavement as well.”

The management said more road signages would be added in the area to remind motorists to be wary of pedestrians and the disabled crossing the road.

“These initiatives will further enhance the safety standard for our pedestrians travelling from the train station to the mall.”

The management said among disabled-friendly amenities at the mall were the provision of wheelchairs, disabled-friendly parking lots, disabled-friendly toilets, ramps, and lifts with disabled-friendly buttons in both Mid Valley and its adjacent The Gardens.
