Say sorry to Wan Azizah over ‘jirat’ remark, PAS man told

In a viral video, Padang Serai PAS division head Shaharuddin Ibrahim is heard saying if PKR's Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail does not support PAS’ Hudud Bill, she should be buried in a non-Muslim grave.

GEORGE TOWN:
A PAS preacher who had called Opposition Leader Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail a takfiri (impure Muslim) has been told to apologise.

Penang Islamic Affairs Committee Chairman Abdul Malik Abul Kassim said the comment by preacher Shaharuddin Ibrahim was unbecoming of a Muslim.

“Religious extremists are not just terrorists with weapons but also ones who label a fellow Muslim a takfiri.

“By doing this, it shows that he has deviated from the real Islamic teachings.

“Islam is the blessing of all worlds. (Islam adalah rahmat seluruh alam). Islam is preached through pearls of wisdom,” Malek said at a press conference at Komtar today.

Shaharuddin had said Wan Azizah should be buried in a non-Muslim grave if she did not support PAS’ efforts to debate the Hudud law amendment in Parliament.

Shahruddin said this in a sermon at the Sembilang Mosque in Seberang Jaya recently. He is PAS’ Padang Serai division chairman.

“Kak Wan, Kak Wan kena angkat tangan. Kalau Kak Wan tak angat tangan boleh menyebabkan jatuh iman. Kalau ditakdirkan lepas tak angkat tangan itu mati … kami tanam (di) jirat ( tanah perkuburan bukan Islam).”

It roughly translates to: “Wan Azizah must raise her hand (indicating an “aye” vote in Parliament for the Hudud law amendment).

“If she does not raise the hand then her faith is lost. If she does not raise her hand then when she dies… we will bury her in a jirat (sepulchre; a graveyard for non-Muslims),” Shaharuddin was heard saying in a YouTube video of the sermon.

The message can also be understood as being directly addressed to Wan Azizah as there are no pronouns in the sentences in Malay above.

Shaharuddin had previously courted controversy by saying if the DAP took over Malaysia, let alone Penang, all Muslim calls to prayer (azan) would be banned.

After mounting criticism, Shaharuddin apologised and the DAP and the Penang Government accepted his apology.

Commenting further, Malek asked Shaharuddin to imagine a situation where he had been “condemned” as a takfiri over the azan issue, before he could say sorry.

“Shaharuddin must openly apologise to Wan Azizah. Please be moderate, do not be a religious extremist!” Malek added.
