PETALING JAYA: A Malaysian author was voted Best Newcomer in the British Fantasy Awards held at FantasyCon 2016 in England, on Sunday.

The Star reported that Selangor-born Zen Cho, 30, who currently resides in London, received the award for her book titled Sorcerer To The Crown.

Her book is set in Regency-era London and is about England’s first African Sorcerer Royal Zacharias Whyte, and his attempts to discover why the country’s magical stocks are drying up. The book is the first of Cho’s Sorcerer Royal historical fiction trilogy.

Cho had also previously received the William L Crawford Fantasy Award from the International Association For The Fantastic In The Arts for her book Spirits Abroad, a collection of short stories within the speculative fiction genre.

She was also reportedly the editor of Cyberpunk: Malaysia, a collection of science fiction stories published by Fixi Novo.

The British Fantasy Awards is presented annually by the British Fantasy Society and winners are decided through a combination of voting and juries.
