KUALA LUMPUR:
MCA will present its counter proposal on the redrawing of election boundaries by the Election Commission (EC) at the BN Supreme Council meeting on Friday, its president, Liow Tiong Lai, said.

He said the party opposed the suggested delineation as it did not augur well for a multi-ethnic and multi-religious nation, reported Star Online.

Earlier this week, he was also quoted as saying that the exercise was not healthy as it would push the country towards becoming a theocratic state.

He had said some Malay-majority areas would have more Malays and Chinese-majority constituencies more Chinese.

Speaking to the media after chairing the MCA Central Committee meeting yesterday, he said the proposed redelineation had affected 26 of the 40 parliamentary seats the party was set to contest in the next general election.

The rest of the 14 seats, he added, were minimally affected.

Leaders from 85 MCA divisions, where the affected seats were located, also had a meeting to discuss the impact of the proposed redelineation.

During the 2008 and 2013 general elections, the MCA and Gerakan fared badly, losing to DAP and PKR candidates.

The proposed changes to state and parliamentary constituencies in the peninsula and Sabah will be on public display until Oct 14.

Objections may be raised by state governments, local authorities and voters in groups of a minimum of 100 each.
