Consult stakeholders before redrawing electoral boundaries, Bersih urges EC

The electoral reform group says this will prevent gerrymandering or any form of manipulation to benefit certain factions.

Bersih says the Election Commission should ensure that the delineation of electoral boundaries is carried out in a fair and just manner.
PETALING JAYA:
Electoral reform group Bersih has called on the Election Commission (EC) to consult stakeholders before the upcoming delineation of electoral boundaries.

Bersih said consultations are important to prevent gerrymandering or any form of manipulation of boundaries to benefit certain factions.

“Through such discussions, the EC can listen to the stakeholders and ensure that delineation of electoral boundaries can be carried out in a fair and just manner,” it said in a statement today.

Bersih also urged the government to declassify the report prepared by the electoral reform committee (ERC) to the government in 2020.

It said the report’s findings should be made public, debated on and implemented in stages.

The government should also be mindful of the changes in the electoral landscape following the introduction of Undi18 and the automatic voter registration system, which have increased the total number of eligible voters by 6 million, it said.

“This had led to an imbalanced distribution of voters in constituencies such as Bangi and Sabak Bernam, which have a total of 311,469 and 51,842 registered voters, respectively.

“The disparity of voters in these constituencies is not in line with the spirit of the Federal Constitution, which demanded constituencies from the same state to have ‘more or less similar’ numbers of voters,” it said.

It is understood that Sarawak will be ready for delineation in the near future, because electoral boundaries were last drawn in the state in 2015.

Sabah is expected to follow suit in 2025, with peninsular Malaysia doing so in 2026.
