The Star Online reported that H Shalini, 14, has to undergo a second procedure to her right eye as her sight has not been fully restored following the first surgery.
According to her uncle K Letchmighandan, the victim from Johor Bahru has complained that everything looked “tiny” when she uses the affected eye to read.
“We hope the second operation, scheduled in October, will yield a positive result,” he said, adding that the family, who was worried sick over this latest development, had already spent RM19,000 on the first surgery.
Doctors have told the family that a second operation would involve replacing the torn layer on Shalini’s retina with silicon. However, they could not guarantee that her eyesight would return to conditions prior to the incident.
Shalini currently wears an eye patch to prevent infection.
The eye was damaged on August 15 when Shalini was allegedly struck with a plastic ruler thrown by a male classmate, whom she had told off earlier for fighting.
Her parents have since received approval to transfer their daughter to another school, out of concern for her safety.
According to Letchmighandan, he was told that the boy involved in the incident was suspended for two weeks, and no further action was taken.
The daily however, quoted Iskandar Puteri deputy police chief DSP Ismail Dollah as saying the authorities were still investigating the case for causing grievous hurt.
