GEORGE TOWN:
A young mother, who stole toys for the love of her child, has been sentenced to jail for 10 days and fined RM2,000, reported The Star.

Rozita Mohamad Nor, 29, pleaded guilty to stealing RM560 worth of goods, including a packet of batteries, a toy car, a wireless charger, a remote-controlled helicopter and a toy car battery.

She committed the offence on Sept 4 at Tesco Tanjung Pinang.

The daily reported that the mother of four admitted to the offence, which carries a jail term of up to 10 years and a fine.

National Legal Aid Foundation lawyer Siti Zhamaliah Mohd Ismail, who mitigated for Rozita, told the court that her client committed the crime as her child was crying and wanted the toys.

Magistrate L. Umma Devi, in passing sentence on the accused, told Rozita not to repeat the offence and to be a good role model for her children.

“Even if you can’t afford to buy it, you should not take a shortcut,” the magistrate said.

Rozita had been ordered to serve her sentence from Sept 5.

However, it is unclear whether she paid the fine or will be serving additional jail term.
