GEORGE TOWN: The famous restaurant Nasi Kandar Line Clear in Penang Road here was raided by Customs officers last night after receiving complaints from patrons that it did not issue GST receipts (tax invoices).
About 9pm yesterday, Customs officers, in plainclothes and posing as customers, began observing to determine if customers were being issued with tax invoices.
Penang Customs Deputy Director (Registrants’ Detection, GST Unit) Mohd Imran Mohd Roslan said his men went to the restaurant after receiving complaints that receipts were not being issued upon making payments.
“The eatery appears to have no records for all their transactions.
“As the restaurant is registered for GST, we will also investigate if they have evaded paying taxes,” he said when met by reporters.
Imran said footage of surveillance cameras at the restaurant had been confiscated while other documents pertaining to the investigation had been seized as well.
The case will be investigated under Section 33 of the 2014 Goods and Services Tax Act for committing an offence related to the issuance of tax invoice.
Those convicted under this Act will face a maximum fine of RM30,000 or two years’ jail sentence, or both.
Line Clear Restaurant spokesperson Madinah Lokman was not immediately available for comment.
