Eight reports of kidnap attempts in Jelutong

Penang police say several men have attempted to pull workers into a car or van in Jalan Sungai Pinang, Jelutong.

Police received eight reports from women workers of a clothing factory here on kidnap attempt incidents from Aug 28 to 30, according to Northeast district police chief ACP Mior Faridalathrash Wahid.

He said based on detailed investigations, police found several men had attempted to pull the workers into a car or van in Jalan Sungai Pinang, Jelutong.

“We have studied the closed-circuit television camera recordings found around the factory and found evidence or leads which can help in our investigations,” he told reporters here yesterday.

He added that police had increased patrols around Jalan Sungai Pinang to safeguard the workers and residents in the area.

Meanwhile, in Bukit Mertajam, police detained a Thai national who tried to steal money belonging to a fishmonger at Pasar Minggu Ban Busuk here on Sunday.

Seberang Perai Tengah (SPT) district police chief ACP Nik Ros Azhan Nik Abdul Hamid said the 34-year-old man, who was soliciting for donations, was injured on the forehead after he was assaulted by angry members of the public.
