PETALING JAYA: The crane operator sought by the police to assist the probe into the death of a woman driver in Jalan Raja Chulan last week, has fled the country.

The Sun, quoting a police source, said the 51-year-old Indonesian man is believed to have left the country, barely two days after the August 25 incident, which saw 24-year-old Chin Khoon Sing crushed to death, after a 500kg crane hook fell 20 floors and slammed into her Perodua Kelisa.

According to the source, the suspect is already on Interpol’s Red Notice list – an alert notice against a person wanted by national jurisdictions for prosecution, or to serve a sentence based on an arrest warrant or court decision.

“We (police) have checked with the Immigration Department for the suspect’s whereabouts but the investigators learned that he had escaped from Malaysia on Aug 27,” said the source, adding that Interpol’s help will be sought to track down the man.

An Immigration Department officer, when contacted by the daily, refused to comment, as they are yet to “receive any report from the police.”

The suspect fled the construction site in the city, soon after the incident happened at 7.15pm on Aug 25.

City police are probing the case under causing death by negligence.

A Department of Occupational Safety and Health (DOSH) spokesman told The Sun that they are in the midst of conducting a probe into the incident, and refused to divulge information on the action to be taken against the construction company and the contractor who supplied the crane.

The incident is believed to have happened when the rope supporting the hook snapped, causing it to plunge down from the crane.

The daily also contacted the construction company involved, and a spokesperson confirmed that all work on the project has been suspended, pending investigations by the authorities.
