Ramkarpal Singh, the MP for Bukit Gelugor, said the police should investigate the matter from all angles including possible corruption, referring to allegations that the crane might have been operating after permitted hours and the permitted zone as alleged in the media.
The authorities should also look into possible offences under the Occupational Safety and Health Act, and the Factories and Machinery Act.
“No doubt, construction development is a major part of any developing nation but it must always be within the strict confines of the law and never at the expense of the safety of the public,” he said.
On Thursday, a Penang woman, Chin Khoon Sing, 24, was killed when a crane hook fell on her car during a traffic jam at Jalan Raja Chulan in Kuala Lumpur. She died on the spot with serious neck and chest injuries.
The crane hook fell from the 20th floor of the Royale Pavilion Hotel under construction in Jalan Raja Chulan.
Kuala Lumpur police said investigations were being carried out under the Penal Code for causing death by negligence.
Ramkarpal Singh said in a statement that the authorities should take necessary action against others, including the employers of the crane operator, who may be responsible for his possible negligence.
