Don’t tarnish country’s name overseas, Gerakan tells Bersih

PETALING JAYA:
When it comes to showing love for the country, there’s no need to do anything extreme, says Gerakan Deputy Youth chief Andy Yong.

He said this in reference to Bersih 2.0 chairperson Maria Chin Abdullah’s posting on Facebook that the electoral watchdog intends to go global for the impending Bersih 5 rally.

Chin had written: “Every Malaysian must be up in arms to do his or her part.”

“She (Chin) said the issue was big and can’t be just left to Bersih to handle. Global Bersih must be involved too,” Yong said, adding that Chin also called on everyone who loves the country to play their part.

“Giving a negative image of the country or criticising it while overseas is dangerous.

“The federal and state governments and political parties should be ready and eager to solve problems,” he said, in calling for an end to the political instability that is plaguing the nation currently.

Yong cited the Japanese and mainland Chinese as examples for Malaysians to emulate.

“They would rarely, or never, talk bad about their governments outside their country, even if they dislike them.”

Yong also accused some political parties and NGOs in the country of channelling the anger and frustrations of the people by “promoting radical ideas”.

“They want to shift the focus of the masses for their long term personal gain.”

He explained that as the country heads towards the Merdeka celebrations, protest rallies that would result in violence cannot represent love for the nation.

“Loving our nation means being patriotic.”

He added that this could be done by bringing people together for the common good.

“We must be considerate. We must obey the laws of the land.”
