Malaysian suffers stroke in UK, family hit with RM250,000 bill

Lack of medical insurance, massive bill forces family to seek crowdfunding to settle payments to hospital and bring him home.

Mohamad-Sahar-Mhd-Noor
LONDON: Mohamad Sahar Mhd Noor, a chief clerk at the Kolej Kemahiran Tinggi Mara, Negri Sembilan, was in London to attend his daughter’s graduation as well as to have a family Hari Raya reunion.

Unfortunately, within 20 minutes of leaving the airport on July 4, he suffered a massive stroke, New Straits Times Online reported today.

Sahar was rushed to the Charing Cross Hospital in West London, where he is still warded.

Sahar, however, did not have medical insurance and having been warded now for almost a month, the bills have soared to £46,000 (RM250,000).

He had undergone a right frontal external ventricular drain to release pressure on his brain, to allow the release of blood.

Sahar’s daughter, Amirah, said her father’s employer Mara had agreed to advance £30,000 (RM160,000) for the hospital bill.

Still short of funds, the family then launched a fundraising campaign via website GoFundMe.

Within two days, the generosity of donors, both Malaysians and foreigners, saw the fund hit its £25,000 target, reported NST online.

Touched by the family’s plight, donors contributed large and small amounts, with one generous Malaysian even donating £5,000 to the family.

The family is now awaiting approval from the hospital to bring Sahar back to Malaysia for treatment as it would be much cheaper to treat him in Malaysia.

They are also waiting for green light from Malaysia Airlines for the flight home as a doctor and a nurse would be required to accompany him on the flight if and when he is released from the hospital.

In the meantime, the family is worried that the hospital bill, which comes up to almost £2,000 a day, will continue to increase each day Sahar remains in hospital.

According to the NST Online report, the family is now appealing to the generosity of fellow Malaysians to help them bring Sahar home as soon as possible.

Those who wish to help the family can do so by channelling their donations to: Urgent Help Sahar Noor Stroke Fund.
