A tweet at Selena Gomez News@SelenaHQ on Twitter, said: “New outfit out of respect for the culture and religion in Malaysia!”
Along with the tweet was a group shot of the lovely Gomez surrounded by her dance troupe, with everyone dressed modestly in black. Gomez herself wore a long-sleeved black top and flowing black pants.
Another tweet said: “VIDEO: Selena removed the ‘too sexual’ visuals of her in revealing dresses for the show tonight!”
Grateful that Gomez showed so much respect for Malaysians, Twitter user Fizzy wrote: “queen of giving respect to cultures and countries with what they want. A legend,” while Jonathan said: “Oh nice.”
Apart from the black top and black pants, Gomez’ other outfits were more modest than she’s ever been dressed in before. In a tweet saying: “New outfit to show respect”, Gomez was seen dressed in a sleeveless black top paired with skin-tight pants and what appears to be a red-and-black chequered shirt tied around her waist.
In the performance for “Kill Em With Kindness”, Gomez took to wearing all black yet again with a big silver jacket.
The last two tweets after the concert said: “Selena listened to the City Council and covered herself up! No need for protestors. Stay safe everyone. X”
“We hope everyone stays safe while leaving the show! There is a lot of police outside and we hope the protestors stay calm/leave.”
In the week leading up to the Selena Gomez concert, PAS Youth voiced their disapproval at having the artiste perform in Malaysia for fear her sexy image and performance would tarnish the month of Syawal.
Selangor Islamic Affairs Exco Ahmad Yunus Hairi, from PAS meanwhile ordered that all mosques in Selangor organise special prayers to invoke divine intervention for Gomez’s concert to be cancelled.
On Sunday, PAS Youth Chief Nik Mohamad Abduh Nik Abdul Aziz said it was inappropriate for Muslims to attend the Selena Gomez concert because it not only made them neglect their duties as Muslims but it was also a question of moral limitations.
However Shah Alam police chief ACP Shafien Mamat confirmed on July 20 that the Shah Alam City Council (MBSA) had approved the organisers’ application to hold the concert and that the show would go on as planned.
