During the Malaysian Superbike Championships at the Sepang International Circuit on Sunday, seven young Muslim women chose to dress in headscarfs that matched their baju kebaya despite having the job as grid girls.
According to a report in The Star Online that quoted Harian Metro, the women were hired by a boutique specialising in Muslimah-attire named ZettyJasmy.
Speaking to the Malay daily, boutique founder Jasmi Jamil Abdul Malek said he wanted to make a point that modest attire that covered one’s aurat could also make an impact.
“Often, when we think about grid girls, we think of those dressed in sexy attire.
“That is why we want to change this perception, and we hope that it can be accepted by the public,” he said.
However it could be a little too soon to expect acceptance from the general public as many netizens took to social media to criticise the idea although there were others who supported it.
Whether it is a case of event-appropriate attire may be too soon to say but for now bare midriffs, long legs and busty grids girls are still the preferred choice.
