In commenting on a Reuters report which claimed Anwar and Mahathir were set to join forces against Prime Minister Najib Razak, PKR life member Badrul Hisham Shaharin said though the move was “idealistic”, Anwar just wanted to bring reform to the country.
“Anwar is a big hearted person. After he was released from jail, he announced that he forgave Mahathir and all the conspirators who jailed him.”
However, Badrul, who is better known as Chegubard, said Mahathir still continued to attack Anwar.
Chegubard added that just a few months ago, when Mahathir was in the midst of fighting Najib, he continued to attack Anwar.
“Mahathir told the Australian media that Anwar was not fit to be prime minister as he did not have the necessary moral fibre.
“More recently, Mahathir also said Anwar was not fit to become prime minister as he was too old.
“It seems Mahathir is still arrogant and egotistical, so the question is whether Mahathir can work with Anwar” he said, describing the Reuters report as being “idealistic”.
Chegubard said the strength in fighting Barisan Nasional (BN) depended on the pro-Anwar reformasi movement.
“Can they work with Mahathir when he will not admit to his mistakes and apologise to Anwar, and he continues to attack Anwar?
“I don’t think so,” he said.
Anwar has said there was “every reason” for the opposition to work with anyone who is committed to an agenda that pushes reforms, democracy and the rights of the people.
Anwar, a protege of Mahathir, was first jailed in the late 1990s on charges of sodomy and graft after he was sacked as deputy prime minister by Mahathir.
Anwar said he was willing to overlook the decades of bad blood he has had with his former boss if it means giving power back to the people.
