The advisory issued by Global Affairs Canada states that a grenade attack on a bar in Puchong, near Kuala Lumpur, has been linked to terrorism and that further attacks are possible.
It has sent out emails to all those who are registered with the Government of Canada’s Registration of Canadians Abroad service.
It has advised them to share the information with other Canadian nationals in their area.
The advisory states: “There is a threat of terrorism in Malaysia, including in Kuala Lumpur.”
The email goes on to say that on June 28, a grenade attack occurred at a bar in Puchong and that Malaysian authorities have arrested a number of individuals with suspected links to terrorism. Further attacks, it says, are possible.
“Terrorist targets could include government buildings, places of worship, schools, transportation hubs and public areas such as tourist attractions, restaurants, bars, coffee shops, shopping centres, markets, hotels, and sites frequented by foreigners.
“Exercise a high degree of personal security awareness, maintain a heightened level of vigilance and be aware of your surroundings at all times,” it says.
Canadian citizens who have left Malaysia have been asked to send an email to the Registration of Canadians Abroad service.
It advises Canadians in need of emergency consular assistance to call the High Commission of Canada in Kuala Lumpur at 6 (03)2718-3333 or the Emergency Watch and Response Centre in Ottawa directly at +16139968885
