“Dharmendran’s widow and family members are disappointed and saddened by this verdict,” said Surendran who is also Padang Serai MP and PKR Vice President.
He was commenting on the decision of the Kuala Lumpur High Court on Wednesday to acquit all four police officers charged for Dharmendran’s murder on May 21, 2013. “If it’s the verdict of the court that these four policemen did not kill Dharmendran, then who did?”
The family wants an explanation from the Inspector-General of Police and Attorney-General on their failure to secure any conviction and asked what immediate steps could now be taken in the wake of the verdict, added the lawyer.
Dharmendran was murdered while in police custody was beyond doubt, added the lawyer. “His body had 52 injury marks and his ears had been stapled while he was alive.”
Surendran also pointed out that on April 28 this year, the EAIC in its report had also concluded that Dharmendran had died “from the use of physical force by the police.”
Despite this overwhelming evidence of police involvement in the death, lamented Surendran, not a single police officer has been found guilty of this shocking crime. “More than three years after Dharmendran’s brutal death, his widow and family have yet to get justice or closure.”
“The feeling of Dharmendran’s family is indescribable.”
