Semporna deputy Umno chief dismisses mass resignation claim

Nasir Sakaran says it may involve some 150 to 200 branch chiefs and not 300 as claimed.

PETALING JAYA:
Semporna Deputy Umno chief Nasir Sakaran has dismissed claims that some 300 branch chiefs have quit the party, saying most probably it involves about 150 to 200 branches.

He said the move by the branch chiefs was based on emotions, without thinking of the long-term impact.

Nasir said he had not received any letter appointing him as the acting branch chief after Semporna Umno division chief Mohd Shafie Apdal was suspended by the Umno Supreme Council last Friday. Shafie is currently in Medina, Saudi Arabia, performing the Umrah.

“We have not receive any statement from Shafie Apdal yet,” he said, adding that Shafie was at the moment performing his Umrah in Mecca and was expected to return either today or tomorrow.

Sulabayan assemblyman and Semporna Umno vice-chairman Jaujan Sambakong said he had resigned from Umno, citing the suspension of Shafie as unfair.

He said he, Semporna Umno permanent chairman Eranza Saribu, 17 divisions and 300 branch leaders had quit the party.

Semporna Umno division has 481 branch chiefs.
