PKR Communications Director Fahmi Fadzil had informed the media about Kayong’s death, although details remain sketchy.
“Very sad news,” Fahmi had later tweeted.
According to PKR’s official Twitter account, Kayong was gunned down at 9am.
Meanwhile, the Borneo Post reported that the shooting took place at a traffic light intersection of the Kuala Baram bypass.
“His pick-up truck which bears the party logo was shot through the driver’s side window and he was reportedly shot once in the neck,” the daily reported.
The Borneo Post also noted that Kayong was an advocate of social issues in the state, especially on native customary rights issues, which he brought up in his campaign.
His death came a day after he commented on a social media posting by a Brunei citizen criticising the presence of churches along main roads in Miri.
